I’m never reading just one book at a time.
Currently, I’m towing four different books around with me. I’m finally reading The Handmaid’s Tale, but when that gives me nightmares I switch for a day or two to the (so far) more upbeat Scattered All Over the Earth by Yoko Tawada.
Yet sometimes I just need to read something more inspiring and technical, so I’ll take out my well-loved copy of The Modern Library Writer’s Workshop or Reading Like a Writer, both lovely craft books I’ve written about before plenty of times.
I’m also always listening to at least one book. Right now it’s Crossings by Ben Goldfarb, a nonfiction science book about the fascinating, infuriating and depressing ecological impacts roads have on wildlife.
You won’t be surprised to learn, then, that I was diagnosed last year with ADHD.1
